SYNOPSIS:

In an unnamed town and school, three friends, seventeen-year-old American-Lebanese student Zarina Al-Doumit, an unannounced lesbian, and her two friends, wild girl Cleo and quiet girl Klara, are in school discussing what to do. Zarina, more depressed than ever, reveals that her bully, Jennifer Riley, has taken her job, leaving her with little money. The girls decide to go to a tech convention happening in town before attending their classes. In Zarina’s class, she encounters Jennifer Riley, who verbally bullies her during an ICT class in which they explore AI and an upcoming dating app at the tech convention called SoulSync, which matches users with their ‘true soul mate’ through AI. After class, Zarina and Jennifer notice the school’s upcoming leaver dance, the ‘Rose Ball’.

Returning home accompanied by her two friends, Zarina enters only to argue with her mother, Samara, who is worried about Zarina still seeing women, as Samara does not accept her daughter's lesbian identity. Zarina expresses her frustration with her mother, who fails to connect with her. Samara forces Zarina to go to their mosque due to losing her job, in an attempt to purge Zarina’s sin. At the mosque, Zarina’s father, Mustafa, supports his daughter and tries to calm the situation, resulting in them ordering pizza from Zarina’s old workplace. Zarina showers and speaks to her friends when Jennifer arrives, now having to deliver food. Zarina, answering the door in only a towel, leaves Jennifer flustered and herself confused and embarrassed by Jennifer’s reaction and her own behavior. Zarina speaks with her friends about Jennifer and, after the conversation, decides to test SoulSync at the tech convention to prove it doesn’t work.

The next day, Zarina matches with Jennifer on the app, while Cleo gets a hard-nosed wannabe cop, and Klara gets Lee, a rebel without a cause hooligan. Zarina, having to work with Jennifer on a shared media project, reluctantly asks Jennifer out to the movies, and Jennifer accepts. At the cinema, Zarina and Jennifer connect, and Jennifer reveals she too is a lesbian and was trying to build Zarina up. The two decide to date, having felt a spark following Jennifer’s confession of having a crush on Zarina. Klara and Cleo's dates, opposite to their own personalities, fail. Samara decides to take over the school's dance after the previous planner quits. Zarina and Jennifer, helping Cleo set up the ball, are caught by Samara, leading to a full argument between mother and daughter.

While letting the family drama cool down, Jennifer and Zarina argue over Zarina's unwillingness to come out and Jennifer’s hypocrisy of not coming out, leading to a breakup. Cleo and Klara start a fight as their personalities clash. The four women all walk away from one another, but Cleo, with her match Sean, falls in love with his sense of self-control after helping him embrace his wild side. Klara manages to connect with her match after finding his quieter side and his willingness to help Klara live a little. Zarina and Samara stop speaking, causing Zarina to have no one to support her financially and, with no friends to talk to and her breakup, she is forced to start a new project on her own, with Jennifer refusing to talk. Returning from her school day, she finds out from the school principal that years ago, Samara was an upcoming dancer but called it off when Zarina was born. Samara's plan for a modest school dance fails, resulting in the Rose Ball being deserted.

Zarina confronts Samara, asking if she ruined her mother's life, which starts them speaking again. Zarina and Samara agree to talk again, and that’s all. Zarina heads upstairs to her room but listens in on her parents as they discuss their lives. Feeling guilty for ruining everyone's lives, Zarina returns to her friends Cleo and Klara, who apologize for the fight, and with more tempered personalities, agree to help Zarina make amends to her mother by setting up a Rose Ball to showcase her dance. Zarina and Samara bond over it after finally accepting one another. Zarina attends the dance, where she decides to come out of the closet. Jennifer and Zarina kiss as the dance spotlight falls on them, embracing their true nature; they make out as everyone enjoys the Rose Ball dance.
